Art World is on another planet
Posted in contemporary art on 8 July 2009 bySorry, this one is too short by a guilty mile, but I had to get it in before my eyes rolled rightside in my head.
In the June/July issue of Art World is an interview with Carl Andre; a guy who uses bricks and mortar like no brickie could. Here’s the quote verbatim, from the interviewer, Morgan Falconer: “…it was Andre who wrote the statement that accompanied [Frank] Stella’s pictures at MoMA, and which later became one of the most widely quoted statements on Minimalism. ‘Frank Stella is not interested in expression of sensitivity,’ but ‘in the necessities of painting.’”
That’s a widely quoted statement? These artists know how to spin a yarn eh? I’ll bet Morgan Falconer can really get ‘em flying with the witty comments at the pub. It’s not like the quote is ripped from a well constructed paragraph either. The phrase is equally puzzling when trying to hammer it in with the rest of the article. Someone please get one million copies of Oscar Wilde to these people, QUICK!
